A Brief Guide to Purchasing A Used / Refurbished
Dell Laptop
There is little question that
mobile computing is the future of computing and has been so for many years. The
advancements in the mobile computing field could be considered to be nearly
exponential as technology refinement and innovation has allowed for ever-more
powerful and useful devices that easily travel with you. Virtually everyone you
know has at least 1 mobile computing device, if not several, ranging from cell
phones, PDAs, iPods, and of course laptop computers. The purpose of this
document is to give the reader some basic insight regarding the purchase of
laptop computers, specifically refurbished laptop computers.
Why Choose a Used / Refurbished
Laptop?
The simple answer is that you want
more for your money. Used Laptops offer the user great value as they are
generally less than three years old and often come from a corporate environment
in which they have been meticulously maintained, also many of the Used Laptops
in today’s market have been manufacturer refurbished and guaranteed and as such
offer virtually the same owner protection as new for far less money. Used /
Refurbished laptops purchased today will offer many of the same features that
you find in new models for far less money, including built-in wireless
connections, multiple USB ports, DVD/CDRW drives, multi-media capable video
cards, plenty of storage and enough processing power to run all but the most
resource-intensive applications. If you want a laptop for 3-D design
applications or to play the most advanced video games you may want to consider
investing in a new model, but for the majority of users looking at portable
computing solutions, Used / Refurbished laptops offer great value, reliability
and the ability to perform all the tasks you will ever require of it at a
significant discount from new.
By The Numbers:
In previous articles I have
discussed
refurbished desktop computers and have indicated that most users do not need
the latest and greatest in computing technology, as they simply will never use
it. The same can certainly be said with regard to laptop machines. Most of the
refurbished laptops that you will find in today’s marketplace will come with a
minimum of a Pentium III processor and generally good bargains are still found
when looking in the Pentium 4 processor range. Laptops by design are generally
built with standard PC use in mind, which is for Word Processing, Internet
Browsing, media play back, and document storage. Though manufactures have been
making high-end laptops that are designed with the gamer in mind, their price
tag can certainly be prohibitive, and the majority of laptop users will play
games on their laptop that can easily be run on a Pentium III or older Pentium
IV processors. Often times perceived limitations in a laptops performance can
be resolved via a simple and cheap memory upgrade as a laptops performance can
have as much to do with its processor speed as it does with the total RAM –
Random Access Memory – which is installed in the device. Other perceived
limitations can also be resolved but simply upgrading specific components. For
example, if burning CDs or DVDs is a necessity, CD-Rom Drives can be replaced
with CD-RW or even DVD-RW devices in virtually any refurbished laptop you buy.
How to Determine what is right
for YOU:
A good way for you to determine
your laptop computing needs is to take a look at your desktop computing habits.
What applications do you use on a daily basis, what functionalities must you
absolutely have. Look into the minimum requirements of applications and be sure
that the laptop you are looking to purchase meets said requirements. How do you
plan on using your laptop? Is it for business, travel, entertainment, school?
Used / Refurbished laptops can generally meet any and all of your desires
relating to these four standard uses, and as was stated earlier, at a fraction
of the cost.
Who is a Good Candidate for Pre-Owned / Refurbished
Laptops?
Quite simply, anyone whom is
interested in getting the most computing power for their money is a good
candidate to purchase a Used / Refurbished Computer. Our customers range from
Schools and School Districts to Government, Corporate America, Small Business
and of course a wide range of home consumers. In our experience School
Districts can and have saved tens of thousands of dollars on their portable
computing needs all while providing equipment to their faculty and students
which meets and exceeds their needs. The same can be said for virtually any of
our customers. Unless you are in need of a laptop capable of performing the
most intensive computations that current applications require, you would be
remiss not to first look into a used laptop.
Important Considerations:
When choosing a Laptop it is a
good idea to keep several things in mind. Firstly, make sure that you are
getting a gauranteed battery with your purchase; make sure that the seller will
stand behind the battery and its performance for a specified time after your
purchase. Like all batteries, laptop batteries do run down after time, which
will limit your portable computing capabilities. Make sure that you purchase
your laptop from a reputable reseller; a company that stands behind their
product with a reasonable warranty and that has a proven track record of
customer satisfaction. Look for manufacturer refurbished products first, though
this is not always a necessity, it can be considered added security at a higher
cost. Understand the resellers grading method; many resellers might sell you a
B or C grade laptop which generally relates to the condition of the case and the
LCD screen, understanding what the resellers guarantees by its grading scale can
help to ensure that you get what you are expecting.
